Australia Releases Food Standards Code on Nutrition, health, and related claims

On August 19th, 2024, the Federal Register of Legislation published Consolidated Text on “Nutrition, health and related claims (Schedule 4)

Key provisions outlines are as given below:

  • Outlines the conditions for making accurate nutrition content claims about fatty acids, sugars, and other nutrients;
  • Specifies the requirements for health claims, both general and high-level, including the need for scientific evidence and adherence to criteria related to the food’s characteristics;
  • Highlights the importance of serving sizes and reference quantities in vitamin and mineral claims to ensure they follow dietary guidelines;
  • Defines terms like "sugars," "carbohydrates," and "fatty acids" to ensure clarity in food Labeling.
