On January 24, 2025, the Australian Government, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, established “Import Conditions for Dairy for Human Consumption”.

The key points are as follows:

  • The import requirements for dairy and dairy products (including cheese) have been modified in response to a foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Germany;
  • Dairy from Germany can be imported if processed before the FMD exclusion date of November 14, 2024;
  • On January 11, 2025, Germany was removed from the FMD-free country list and is no longer recognized as FMD-free by the Director of Biosecurity;
  • This change affects importers, brokers handling German dairy products.

The rule is effective from January 24, 2025.
