On October 21, 2024, the Federal Register of Legislation published “Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code – Standard 2.9.3 – Formulated meal replacements and formulated supplementary foods”.
The regulation highlights the following points:
- Formulated Meal Replacement is defined as food replacing one or more meals not the entire diet.
- Formulated Supplementary Food as food that supplements a normal diet for adequate energy and nutrients;
- New Nutritional Standards require formulated meal replacements to contain at least 12g of protein, 850 kJ, and 25% RDI of vitamins/minerals;
- Supplementary foods must have 8g of protein, 550 kJ, and 20% RDI of one vitamin/mineral;
- Nutrition panels must declare average vitamin/mineral quantities.
- Claims are allowed if RDI percentages are met and labels must indicate that products are not total diet replacements.
