Canada Allows the Use of Steviol Glycosides from Yarrowia lipolytica VRM in Foods

On July 22, 2021, the Health Canada Food Directorate issued the safety assessment “Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Sweeteners to enable the use of Steviol Glycosides from Yarrowia lipolytica VRM in Variety of Foods”.

The scope of the scientific document is herein summarized:

  • Approval of the use of steviol glycosides from Yarrowia lipolytica VRM as a sweetener in all foods as Steviol glycosides at the same maximum level of use.
  • It is allowed for use at the requested level in various standardized and unstandardized foods such as dairy products, tabletop sweeteners, breakfast cereals, unstandardized beverages, unstandardized confectionaries etc.
  • The scientific data support the safety of steviol glycosides from Y. lipolytica VRM for the same use as Steviol glycosides from other sources.
  • Information related to allergenicity, chemistry, microbiology and molecular biology, nutrition, and toxicology poses no health concerns.

The regulation is effective from July 22, 2021.
