Canada Approves New Source of Lipase for Use in Food Enzymes

On October 30, 2024, Health Canada modified the List of permitted food enzymes to authorize the “Use of lipase Aspergillus niger strain PLR”.

The document summarizes the following points:

  • Aspergillus niger strain PLR as a source of lipase is permitted in bread, flour, pasta, and bakery products;
  • The enzyme shall be used at maximum level "Good Manufacturing Practice" (GMP);
  • The safety assessment confirms the use in the specified foods based on reviews of allergenicity, chemistry, microbiology, and toxicology;

The regulation is effective October 30, 2024.
