On August 30th, 2024, Health Canada issued a notice on the modification of the “List of Approved Food Additives to Exclude Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)”.

The document summarizes the following points:

The List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses is amended;

  • BVO can be used at up to 15 ppm in citrus or spruce-flavored beverages;
  • The updated safety assessment indicated no health concern with the current permitted use of BVO as a food additive;
  • The transition period is applicable for a period of one year to allow impacted products to be reformulated and relabeled.

The regulation is effective from August 30, 2024.
