Canada Modifies the List of Permitted Food Additives with other Accepted Uses to Extend the Use of Acetic Acid

On February 27, 2023, Health Canada Food Directorate published a regulation on the “Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Food Additives to Extend the Use of Acetic Acid to 2'-Fucosyllactose”.

The objectives of the scientific document are indicated as follows:

  • Approves the use of acetic acid as a crystallization aid and washing agent during the manufacture of 2'-fucosyllactose;
  • Acetic acid is permitted as a pH-adjusting agent or preservative in unstandardized foods and certain standardized foods as GMP; 
  • The Maximum residual limits of acetic acid in 2'-FL in the Infant formula shall not exceed 1.0%;
  • The legislation further amends the List of Permitted Food Additives with Other Accepted Uses. 

The regulation is effective from February 27, 2023.
