Canada Modifies the List of Permitted Preservatives to Enable Use of Glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia in Non-Alcoholic Beverages

On June 10th, 2022, Health Canada’s Food Directorate published the “Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Preservatives to Enable the Use of Long-Chain Glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia MUCL 53181 in Various Non-Alcoholic Beverages”.

 

The document highlights the following:

  • Approves the use as a preservative in certain standardized and unstandardized non-alcoholic beverages;
  • The preservative functions are considered as an antibacterial agent and antifungal agent;
  • Maximum use levels range from 25 ppm to 100 ppm in the finished beverages;
  • Information related to technical, chemistry, and toxicology supports the requested use of the additive for its intended purpose;
  • The regulation amends the list of permitted preservatives published in parts 2 and 3 of the list.

The regulation is effective from June 10th, 2022.
