Canada Modifies the list of Permitted Sweeteners to extend the use of Sucralose

On July 11th, 2024, the Health Canada published regulation on the “Modification to the List of Approved Sweeteners to Expand Sucralose Usage". Sucralose is an approved sweetener in a variety of beverages and solid foods.
The scope of the document highlights the following points:
- The regulation amends the List of Permitted Sweeteners;
- Allows the use of Sucralose in liquid protein preparations for adults under medical supervision and by individuals 18 years of age or older up to 0.08%;
- The supplement is intended for use under medical supervision;
- The safety assessment studies confirmed sucralose is acceptable at the permitted use level;
- Sucralose shall comply with its food grade specifications or international purity and identity standards as set out in the regulation.
The regulation is effective from July 11, 2024.
