On September 8th, 2023, Health Canada’s Food Directorate published a regulation on the “Modification to the list of permitted supplemental ingredients to enable the use of Iodine”. The regulation amends the list of permitted supplemented foods.
The document summarizes the following points:
- Approves use of Iodine in the food category listed in the List of Permitted Supplemented Food;
- The label declared amount shall not exceed 76 µg per serving of the stated size for caffeinated beverages;
- The amount shall not exceed 189 µg per serving of stated size in foods other than caffeinated beverages;
- The mineral nutrient “Iodine” shall comply with the applicable labeling requirements;
- The dietary and nutritional exposure studies support the safe use of Iodine as a supplemental ingredient.
The regulation is effective from September 8th, 2023.
