On November 7, 2024, Health Canada issued a consultation on “Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) on Spinosad (PMRL 2024-23) in Cranberries”.
The key points of the proposal are given below:
- The proposed increase in MRL 0.7 ppm for Spinosad on Cranberries is based on re-assessed field trial data on strawberry to address proposed preharvest interval;
- The current MRL is established at 0.01ppm;
- The proposed MRL differs from U.S. and Codex standards but aligns with international trade obligations for global recognition;
- The scientific assessment indicates the revised MRL ensures that Spinosad residues on Cranberries are safe for human consumption;
- A dietary risk assessment evaluates pesticide residue safety showing no health concerns from long-term consumption of treated foods.
The Consultation is open for public comments till January 21, 2025
