Canada Proposes to Approve Spirulina Extract as a Food Colour

On January 09, 2020, the Health Canada’s Food Directorate has proposed to amend the List of Permitted Colouring Agents in order to enable the use of Spirulina extract as a food colouring agent.
In fact, the use of spirulina extract has recently been highlighted as a point of interest for the food industry. Therefore, after premarket safety assessment of a food additive submission the Canadese agency is now seeking scientific information relevant to the safety of spirulina extract as a food colouring.
