On September 23rd, 2021, Health Canada published a draft notification on the “Proposal to Enable the Use of Long-Chain Glycolipids from Dacryopinax spathularia MUCL 53181 as a Preservative in Various Non-Alcoholic Beverages”.
The scope of the document is summarized below:
- Use as a preservative in certain standardized and unstandardized non-alcoholic beverages;
- Approve the safety and efficacy of long-chain glycolipids from D. spathularia as antibacterial and antifungal/antimycotic agents;
- Enable the use of additives by modifying part 1 and part 2 of the List of permitted preservatives;
- The requested maximum use levels range from 25 parts per million (ppm) to 100 ppm in the finished beverages.
The public consultation period is valid until December 06th, 2021.
