Codex Alimentarius Amends the Standard for Dried Edible Fungi

On October 9, 2024, Codex Alimentarius published “Standard for Dried Edible Fungi, CXS 39-1981” amending the wording in Section 7 Methods of analysis and sampling.

The document summarises the following:

  • The standard applies to dried fungi, including freeze-dried varieties, whether whole or sliced from all edible species following their preparation and packaging;
  • Raw materials and end products must meet edible fungi standards ensuring they are healthy, clean, properly dried, and within defect tolerances;
  • Packaging must protect the product from humidity, ensure uniformity in type and weight, and use safe, new materials;
  • Labels must include the common and scientific names of fungi, product type and style, and additional requirements for non-retail containers;
  • The Methods of analysis and sampling must comply with the provisions of Recommended Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CXS 234-1999).
