On October 2, 2024, the Department of Civil Affairs, Danish Ministry of Justice issued a consultation on the “Authorisation of the Use of Acheta domesticus powder as a novel food”.
The document highlights the following points:
- The proposed regulation shall amend Regulation (EU) 2017/2470;
- Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 allows only authorized novel foods to be sold in the EU intended for the consumption of the general population;
- The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed and determined the substance is safe for the general population in certain food products;
- Potential allergenic proteins were identified leading to recommendations for additional research on allergenicity;
- Specific sensitization labelling isn't required, however, general allergen rules applicable for those allergic to crustaceans and dust mites.
