On October 31, 2024, the European Commission published regulation on “Use of Iron milk caseinate as a source of Iron in Total Diet Replacements and Food for Special Medical Purposes” per Regulation (EU) No. 609/2013 amending Regulation (EU) No. 2024/2791.
The document summarizes the following points:
- Allows use of iron milk caseinate as a source of iron in Food for special medical purposes, excluding foods for infants and young children;
- Amends the use of the additive in Total Diet replacement for weight control under the proposed conditions;
- The 2022 European Food Safety Authority assessment concluded that iron milk caseinate is safe and that it is a source from which iron is bioavailable;
- The substance will be included in the Union's list of approved substances for certain food categories and shall amend Annex to Regulation (EU) No 609/2013.
The regulation enters into force 20 days after its publication and is directly applicable in all EU Member States.
