EU Issues Non-approval of Eggshell powder as a basic substance for Plant protection

Key points are summarized as follows:

  • EFSA noted uncertainties in eggshell powder production, leading to varying levels of calcium carbonate which is approved but calcium oxide raised safety concerns;
  • Potential health risks from lead in eggshell powder was observed which may affect neurodevelopment;
  • Residues of eggshell powder on berries at the time of harvest is likely;
  • Eggs and products derived thereof require allergen labelling under the EU food law;
  • Insufficient data on the environmental impact was identified, particularly regarding non-target organisms;
  • Eggshell powder did not meet the approval conditions as a basic substance.
