On September 5, 2024, the European Commission published regulation concerning “The Non-approval of Eggshell powder as a fungicide for Grapevines” as per EC No 1107/2009.
Key points are summarized as follows:
- EFSA noted uncertainties in eggshell powder production, leading to varying levels of calcium carbonate which is approved but calcium oxide raised safety concerns;
- Potential health risks from lead in eggshell powder was observed which may affect neurodevelopment;
- Residues of eggshell powder on berries at the time of harvest is likely;
- Eggs and products derived thereof require allergen labelling under the EU food law;
- Insufficient data on the environmental impact was identified, particularly regarding non-target organisms;
- Eggshell powder did not meet the approval conditions as a basic substance.
