EU Publishes Safety of Tetrahydrocurcuminoids from Turmeric as a Novel Food

On December 22nd, 2021, the European Food Safety Authority on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) delivered the “Safety of Tetrahydrocurcuminoids from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283”.

The scope of the assessment highlights the following:

  • Novel Food (NF) consists of more than 95% of Tetrahydrocurcuminoids;
  • Produced chemically by hydrogenation of curcuminoids extracted from rhizomes of C. longa L;
  • Proposed use of NF in food supplements at a maximum dose of 300 mg/day for adults excluding pregnant and lactating women;
  • The risk of allergenic reactions to the NF is low;
  • The Novel food is found to be safe for the target population at 140 mg/day;
  • The toxicological assessment indicates the Novel food is safe for use at proposed levels.
