On October 12th, 2022, the European Food Safety Authority’s scientific opinions on food contact materials, enzymes and processing aids published the “Safety evaluation of the food enzyme β‐galactosidase from the non‐genetically modified Neobacillus sp. strain AE‐LT”.
Based on this scientific assessment provided by EFSA:
- The food enzyme is intended for use in lactose hydrolysis in milk processing and the manufacture of galacto‐oligosaccharides;
- Dietary exposure to the food enzyme–total organic solids (TOS) was estimated to be up to 2.971 mg TOS/kg body weight (bw) per day;
- Genotoxicity tests raise no safety concern;
- The risk of allergic reactions by dietary exposure is low, however, does not raise safety concerns under the proposed conditions of use.
