On February 09th, 2022, the European Food Safety Authority on food additives and flavorings published the article “Safety evaluation of glucosylated steviol glycosides as a food additive in different food categories” in accordance with the Regulation (EC) No 1331/2008 that establishes a common authorization procedure for food additives, food enzymes, and food flavorings.
The scope of the assessment outlines the following key indicators:
- The additive consists of a mixture of glucosylated steviol glycosides, containing 1–20 additional glucose units bound to parent steviol glycosides;
- Glucosylated steviol glycosides is produced via enzymatic bioconversion using CGTase derived from a non-genetically modified strain;
- The existing acceptable daily intake (ADI) for steviol glycosides (E 960) of 4 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day expressed as steviol can also be applied to glucosylated steviol glycosides;
- Toxicological data assessed supports for the safety of use as a food additive at the proposed use and use levels;
- Recommends lowering the proposed limits for Arsenic below 0.1 mg/kg.
