On November 12th, 2021, the European Food Safety Authority on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) published the “Extension of use of nicotinamide riboside chloride as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283” to further extend the use in various food categories as defined by Regulation (EU) No 609/2013.
The scope of the document is summarized below:
- Use of NRC in ‘meal replacement products’ and ‘nutritional drink mixes’ at levels up to 300 mg/day for the general population;
- Food for special medical purposes (FSMP) and total diet replacement for weight control (TDRWC) at levels up to 500 mg/day in adults;
- The study indicates the lack of tolerable upper intake level (UL) for nicotinamide in infants and hence the safety of the NF has not been established for its proposed use;
- The proposed maximum use level for FSMP and TDRWC corresponds to intake of 210 mg nicotinamide/day and is below the current UL for adults (900 mg/day);
- The NF is considered safe for its use in FSMP and TDRWC;
- The Panel concludes further investigations and re‐evaluation of the UL for nicotinamide may be warranted.
