EU Safety Extension of the Use of Galacto‐oligosaccharides (GOS) as a Novel Food in Food for Special Medical purposes

On March 30th, 2022, the European Food Safety Authorities on Nutrition, Novel Foods, and Food Allergens (NDA) delivered the “Safety extension of the use of Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) as a novel food (NF) in food for special medical purposes” in accordance with the Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.

 

The document outlines the below:

  • GOS is produced from milk lactose using a βgalactosidase and is proposed to be used in food for special medical purposes (FSMP);
  • The target population is applicable to the population over 4 years of age;
  • FSMP containing GOS is not intended to be used if the food supplements containing GOS are consumed on the same day;
  • The proposed maximum daily intake from the use in FSMP is set at 8.25 g GOS;
  • GOS authorized for use in food supplements is allowed up to a daily dose of 16.2 g;
  • The proposed use levels and recommended intakes do not raise safety concerns;
  • Safety extension of the use of GOS in FSMP is acceptable under the proposed conditions of use.
