On October 28th, 2021, the European Food Safety Authority published the “Setting of an import tolerance for Glyphosate in Soybeans” in accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005.
The scope of the document summarizes the following points:
- Assessment of the active substance glyphosate in genetically modified (GM) Soybeans;
- The genetic modification confers tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate;
- MRL calculated according to the existing residue definition in soybeans (glyphosate only) shows no indication that the existing MRL of 20 mg/kg needs to be modified;
- Additionally, MRL of 50 mg/kg was proposed during the MRL review for glyphosate‐tolerant (CP4‐EPSPS) soybeans (sum of glyphosate, AMPA, and N‐acetyl‐glyphosate, expressed as glyphosate);
- Risk management decision needs to be taken on the possible implementation of the residue definition for enforcement on the need to change the existing MRL for soybeans;
- Adequate analytical methods are available to control the residues of glyphosate, AMPA, and N‐acetyl‐glyphosate at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.05 mg/kg;
- Short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the existing uses of glyphosate and the import tolerance on soybeans is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.
