On October 18, 2024, the European Commission published regulation on “Authorizing magnesium L-threonate as a novel food in the market” per Regulation (EC) No. 2024/2694 amending Regulation (EC) No. 2017/2470.
The following key points are highlighted:
- The authorization process based on Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 concerning novel foods is intended for adults only excluding pregnant and lactating women;
- The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that magnesium L-threonate is safe and bioavailable under proposed conditions;
- Maximum intake level is set at 250 mg/day for food supplements;
- Labeling must specify "Magnesium L-threonate" and indicate it's for adult use only excluding pregnant and lactating women.
- Magnesium L-threonate will be included in the Union list of novel foods starting November 07, 2024 for a period of 5 years.
