On November 7, 2024, the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand proposed the use of “New Processing Aid Enzyme to Manufacture Short-Chain Fructo-oligosaccharides (sc- FOS)”.
The draft document highlights the following points:
- Use of Fructosyltransferase (EC 2.4.1.9) from oryzae to Schedule 18 as a processing aid in sc-FOS production under GMP guidelines;
- The safety assessment found the enzyme is non-pathogenic, non-toxigenic, with a strong safety record for similar enzymes concluding no public health risks;
- The proposal is unlikely to impact international trade as no Codex Alimentarius standards exist for enzymes used as processing aids;
- FSANZ's evaluation aligns with international safety and purity standards including those set by JECFA and the Food Chemicals Codex;
- The approval of use of this enzyme can benefit sc-FOS producers by improving manufacturing efficiency and reducing costs.
The Consultation is open till December 5, 2024.
