On June 21, the Food Standard Australia and New Zealand proposed a regulation on the “Removal of oligosaccharide prohibition in infant formula”.

The document proposes the following points:

  • Relates to Combination in IFP of Inulin-type Fructans (ITF) and/or Galacto-oligosaccharides with Lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT);
  • LNnT is a human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) permitted to be added to IFP at a level similar to human milk;
  • Combination of LNnT with ITF or Galacto-oligosaccharides in human health is safe for consumption;
  • To amend the Code to permit the voluntary addition of four HMOs to IFP.

The draft is open for public comments until July 07, 2023.
