On August 31st, 2021, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has published the regulation “Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) First Amendment Regulations, 2021” adding new scope to the existing standards.
The key points of the scientific document are herein summarized:
- Milk powder, when fortified, shall be fortified with such levels of Vitamin A and D, so that the final reconstituted fortified milk shall comply with the levels of micronutrients specified in Clause 3 of Schedule;
- The regulations provide labelling norms for fortified milk and it must comply with the standards;
- Packaging of food fortified with iron shall carry a statement, “People with Thalassemia may take under medical supervision and persons with Sickle Cell Anemia are advised not to consume iron-fortified food products”;
- The notification also amended the clause related to ‘iodine content’ and set the level of nutrients for Iodine Content at 15-30 parts per million (on a dry weight basis) with Potassium Iodate as a source of nutrient;
- Clause 3, Schedule 1 - Fortified raw rice has been amended to Fortified rice.
The regulation is set to be effective from March 1, 2022.
