Mexican Amendment on Additives: Annatto extract (INS 160b ii) Allowed as Colorant

On September 21, 2018, a new amendment for the “Agreement that determines additives and adjuvants in food, beverages and food supplements, their use and health standards – DOF 16/07/12” was published in the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) website.
The Ministry of Health allows Annatto extract (INS 160b ii) as colour in the following foodstuffs

Breakfast cereals
-
Cereal base prepared foods, edible seeds, flours, semolina or mixtures thereof
-
Flavoured combined dairy product
-
Ices, sorbets and ice bases
-
Margarines and oleomargarines
-
Bakery, pastry, confectionery and biscuit products
-
Confectionery products
-
Processed cheeses, mature cheeses and other cheeses
-
Decorations, coatings and fillings
The provisions for respective food categories may be applied from the date of publication of this amendment since they have been evaluated and approved by the Ministry.
