Mexican Amendment on Additives: Annatto extract (INS 160b ii) Allowed as Colorant

On September 21, 2018, a new amendment for the “Agreement that determines additives and adjuvants in food, beverages and food supplements, their use and health standards – DOF 16/07/12”  was published in the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) website.

The Ministry of Health allows Annatto extract (INS 160b ii) as colour in the following foodstuffs

• Breakfast cereals

• Cereal base prepared foods, edible seeds, flours, semolina or mixtures thereof

• Flavoured combined dairy product

• Ices, sorbets and ice bases

• Margarines and oleomargarines

• Bakery, pastry, confectionery and biscuit products

• Confectionery products

• Processed cheeses, mature cheeses and other cheeses

• Decorations, coatings and fillings

The provisions for respective food categories may be applied from the date of publication of this amendment since they have been evaluated and approved by the Ministry.
