Philippines Proposes the Adoption of Codex Guidelines for Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Foods

On 31st July 2024, the Department of Health through FDA, issued a consultation on adoption of the Guidelines on “Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) (CXG 95-2022) as Technical Regulation” per Food Safety Act of 2013.
The key-points of the circular highlights the following:
- Focus on Enhancing public health protection through a robust food and drug regulatory system;
- To set limits on consumption and quality factors, purity requirements, food additives etc., based on the revised guidelines of Codex on RUTF;
- Applicable for children of age 6-59 months with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM);
- RUTF must meet Codex standards for raw materials, nutritional composition (energy density, protein quality, and fat content), and contaminants to ensure safety;
- Food Business Operators must secure a Certificate of Product Registration (CPR) and comply with new Labelling and packaging standards.
The public consultation period is valid until 16 August 2024.
