South Africa Regulates the Protection of Geographical Indications on Agricultural Products Sold at National Level

On March 22, 2019, the South African Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries published the new regulation “Protection of geographical indications used on agricultural products intended for sale in South Africa“ under section 15 of the Agricultural Product Standard Act , 1990 (Act No. 119 of 1990).
The scope of the regulation is:
- Setting rules on the geographical indications used on agricultural products that are sold in the Republic of South Africa;
- Specifying the conditions when the use of geographical indications in prohibited;
- Describe the submission process of applications for the registration, including objections and cancellation.
The regulation shall enter into force on September 22, 2019.
