Switzerland Publishes Ordinance on Genetically Modified Foods

On December 27th, 2023, the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office issued an ordinance on “Genetically Modified Foods” further amending the ordinance on genetically modified foods of 27 May 2020.
The document indicates the following key points:
- The Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office may limit or impose burdens on the tolerance of the products per Article 6, al.3;
- The Transitional Provision of the December 8, 2023, Amendment is valid until January 31, 2025;
- Genetically modified materials that are tolerated in food without approval are listed in Appendix 2;
- Two new food enzymes (pectin lyase and chymosin) are added in Appendix 3;
- GMO products that may be placed on the market shall comply with the provisions of Regulation (EC) 2015/2283.
The Ordinance shall enter into force on February 01, 2024.
