The Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is a proposed regulation by the European Union which will replace the previous Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC) and aimed at improving the environmental sustainability of products placed on the European market. This regulation is part of the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy initiative, with the goal of reducing environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle for a wide range of products from design to end-of-use.

Last April 23rd, the European Parliament approved the final text of the ESPR, bringing the Regulation one step closer to its final publication on the Official Journal.

The ESPR: what’s new?

The main objectives of the ESPR are:

• Improve the product design and reduce the environmental impact
• Establishing environmental criteria for products, such as energy efficiency or waste management
• Improve the product labelling and information provided to the customer in order to enable more informed and sustainable choices

Furthermore, the ESPR aims to introduce also the Digital Product Passport (DPP), a key instrument for improving the sustainability, traceability and transparency of products in the EU market.

The ESPR: when?

The next step for the ESPR is the publication on the Official Journal, expected in the summer of 2024; the Regulation will then finally enter into force 20 days after its official publication.
