U.S. FDA Publishes Food Code 2022

On December 28, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the “FDA Food Code 2022” guiding to mitigate foodborne illness risks and provide a uniform set of national standards for retail food safety.
The document highlights the following key points:
- Addition of Sesame as the 9th major food allergen as per the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act of 2021;
- To increase Consumer awareness of major food allergens as ingredients in unpackaged food;
- To revise the definition of intact meat, including enhancements to clarify time/temperature cooking requirements;
- To reduce foodborne illness risk within food establishments, protecting consumers and industry from potential health consequences and financial loss;
- To create uniform standards for retail food safety to ensure compliance;
- Elimination of unwanted processes for establishing food safety criteria;
- Establishing a more standardized approach to inspections and audits of food establishments.
