United Kingdom Issues Notification on Reforms to Wine Regulation

On April 16th, 2024, The Government of United Kingdom opens consultation on “Wine: third phase of reforms to assimilated EU law” per EU Regulation 2019/934.
The major key points are added as follows:
- The first Statutory Instrument (SI) on ‘The Wine (Revocation and Consequential Provision) Regulations 2023 (No 1362)’, on simplified labelling is effective January 1st 2024;
- The second SI, ‘The Wine Regulations 2024 (No 115)’, to introduce definition for ice wine in July 2024;
- Enabling Carbonation of imported bulk Wine for efficient transportation;
- Imported wine and further sweetening to reduce the risk of microbial spoilage;
- Amending the label of “British Wine”;
- Innovation of “no or low alcohol wine” to boost health benefits and allow more consumer choices;
- To allow producers to benefit from the new arrangements on approved oenological practices.
The public consultation is valid till May 10th,2024.
