On March 20, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its intention to “Extend the compliance deadline for the Food Traceability Rule”.

The key points are as follows:

  • Compliance deadline extended by 30 months, moving it from January 2026 to July 2028 allowing more time for businesses to adapt;
  • No changes to rule requirements, ensuring continued focus on food traceability and public health protection;
  • Additional time for coordination across the food supply chain for smoother implementation;
  • FDA to engage with stakeholders and provide technical guidance to address compliance challenges;
  • Industry support for the extension, recognizing the need for more time to avoid disruptions in the supply chain.
