On April 16, 2025, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released updated findings on “PFAS levels in Bottled Water”, in alignment with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s new drinking water standards.

The key points are as follows:

  • FDA tested 197 bottled water samples between 2023 and 2024 of which 10 samples had detectable PFAS, all below EPA’s new Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs);
  • The analysis included 18 PFAS compounds, detecting four that were within EPA’s established limits and two for which no MCLs currently exist;
  • This is the first time FDA has detected PFAS in bottled water, unlike previous FDA testing in 2016 and in the Total Diet Study;
  • The update follows Section 410 of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, requiring FDA to align with EPA MCLs or justify exemption;
  • FDA will continue PFAS monitoring and publish updates as available.
