US Updates the Post-Market Assessment of Tara Flour

On May 15th, 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration issued latest update on the “Post-Market Assessment of Tara Flour” indicating as an unapproved food additive for human consumption.

The significant points of the updates are as follows:

  • Tara flour does not meet the Generally Recognized as Safe (or GRAS) as there is no scientific regulation available authorizing its usage;
  • No evidence of outbreaks caused due to this additive has been found, yet, evaluating the regulatory status is necessary;
  • Manufacturers shall ensure Tara flour is safe and legal, and are encouraged to consult with FDA;
  • Screening measures have been implemented at ports to prevent the sale of imported Tara flour.
